(AsiaGameHub) – The UK’s Gambling Research Programme is funded by the new operator levy.
UK.- The organization taking over GambleAware’s role in commissioning UK gambling research is seeking a leader for its programme. UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is advancing plans to launch its Gambling Research Programme and has opened applications for a department head to oversee the initiative.
The programme will be funded through the new British gambling levy, which became effective last April. Its leader will be in charge of shaping the future of research into gambling-related harms via evidence-based collaboration. Applications stay open until April 13, matching the government’s timeline for the department to start operating this year.
Per the job description, by the end of the first year, the department head will need to establish the programme as a trusted and credible body within both government and the wider research community. The role is a two-year fixed-term position at the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), reporting to the AHRC’s associate director for the Gambling Research Programme.
Responsibility for new gambling levy funds
The new head will provide strategic direction and decide how gambling levy funds should be allocated for research. The UKRI’s Gambling Research Programme receives 20 percent of levy-generated funds, while 30 percent goes to prevention initiatives and 50 percent to treatment and support services.
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) distributes funds to each recipient, while the Gambling Commission monitors operators’ compliance. In its first nine months, the levy raised £120 million. GambleAware is wrapping up its operations this month.
